In 1996, Medicover decided to embark on an ambitious expansion across Poland, with rapid clinic openings in 6 further cities (Łódź, Katowice, Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Poznań).
In the following year, the company gained its first national client and opened the first onsite clinic. By 1999, Medicover had 15 clinics in Poland, including 6 onsite clinics. With increasing confidence in the Polish market, Medicover started expansion to other Central European countries: first to Romania in 1997, then to Hungary and Estonia in 1998 and the Czech Republic in 1999.
The increasing scale of Medicover meant the company could no longer continue with the very informal management structure of its early years. Warren Paley from CHP introduced Medicover to Dr. Paul Lenz who had recently retired from a distinguished career within the managed healthcare industry in the United States. Paul joined Medicover as Managing Director in Poland and subsequently became CEO of the international business from 1997 until 2000. For the first time Medicover was being led by a medical doctor, which counterbalanced the strong commercial focus under Ed Radkiewicz's leadership.
Nine companies have been Medicover clients continuously from the beginning of Medicover’s activity in Poland, until the present day (Feb. 2015):
