HOW DOES FLU SPREAD?
Flu virus A/H1N1 is highly contagious virus disease, causing regular outbreak of flue of pigs, nevertheless, thanks to similarity with human and bird fu virus, it is able to mutate and finally transmit from a pig to a human. Further mutations than allow human to human transmission, which we are currently witness of.
Flue is spread in particular in the form of drop infection, so called “infectious aerosol”, created during coughing and sneezing. Incubation period of this new type of flu ranges from 1-7 days. The most risky factor is direct contact with respiratory secretion of someone who is ill (max.1 meter) or by touching of infected area and subsequent contact of the hand with mucous membranes on the face. The virus is not spread by consumption of pork meat products processed by heat.
WHAT ARE THE DISTINCTIVE SYMPTOMS OF FLU A/H1N1?
• they are very similar to those of common seasonal flu
• sudden outbreak of difficulties
• fever
• muscle and joint ache
• headache and sore throat
• cough
• ague
• respiratory problems
• extreme fatigue or tiredness accompanied by muscle ache
HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELVES AGAINST THE FLU?
• avoid contact with infected people
• do not shake hands or kiss on cheeks, mouth when greeting
• avoid crowded places with high concentration of people
• be consistent with personal hygiene (frequent and proper washing of hands)
• cover your nose and mouth by a handkerchief when sneezing or coughing. Throw the disposed handkerchief to the rubbish bin.
• do not borrow from others any mobile phones, glasses,silverware, toys (when children are concerned)
• avoid contact with people from affected areas who sneeze, cough of suffer from fever
• avoid touching your face, do not rub your eyes – the disease is very contagious and you will thus decrease the risk of spreading of virus from infected
• eliminate travelling to the most affected areas
• go to doctor immediately you develop distinctive symptoms of swine flu and stay at home
• increase intake of vitamins – eat a lot of fruit and vegetable
