Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the field of study that seeks to fit the job to the person, rather than the person to the job.

This is achieved through the evaluation and design of workplaces, environments, job tasks, equipment, and processes in relationship to human capabilities and interactions in the workplace.

Anytime there is a change in the workplace (new employee, new chair, new desk), new ergonomic solutions are required. It is important that full furniture (chairs, desks) and other accessories are adjustable in order to meet individual worker’s needs, for no two people are alike.

Ergonomics covers the entire work area, including issues regarding the chair, workstation, and lighting.

Effective use of ergonomic practices will assist in maintaining high levels of productivity, avoiding painful and costly employee injuries, and increasing worker satisfaction.

By designing the job around the person, employee will have a decreased risk of injury and an improved perception of their “employee-centered” role at work.

1. Ergonomic worksite evaluation (diagnosis)

In order to implement ergonomic solutions, the job or job functions that pose possible risks must first be identified and evaluated. Methods of gathering information about particular jobs during audit include:interviewing workers and supervisors about the job, conducting walk-through surveys of the work environment, using Evaluation Ergonomic Checklist to identify risk factors and potential hazards, taking photos to illustrate work posture, workstation layout, tools, etc. Information gained from the assessment are analyzing and can then be evaluated, prioritized, and utilized to implement Ergonomics Program.

2. Ergonomic Report (PDF Version)

The Report presents results of the ergonomic evaluation with analysis of the “key points” of the Ergonomic Checklist (working postures, seating, keyboard/input device, monitor, working area, accessories). The Report includes detailed information about potential hazards, possible solutions and proposition of the Ergonomics Program. Executive Summary of the Report is presented to the Customers in their Offices.

Medicover’s Ergonomics Program is mostly based on Training. The goal of ergonomics training should be to enable managers, supervisors, and employees to identify aspects of job tasks that involve potential risk factors, recognize signs and symptoms of possible ergonomic-related disorders, and participate in the development of control measures.

It is generally recommended that all employees receive basic ergonomics awareness training that include any or all of the following topics:

  • How to recognize ergonomic risk factors both on and off the job.
  • How to recognize signs and symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) that may be related to the work environment.
  • General principles for controlling ergonomic risk factors, (e.g. proper postures, lifting technique, seating, etc.)
