The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care consists of three units closely cooperating with one another, namely
- Postoperative Care Unit,
- Intensive Care Unit
- and Preoperative Clinic.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care employs anesthetists and anesthesiological nurses. An anesthetist is a medical doctor trained to administer anesthesia prior to surgery and manage the medical care of patients, including pain therapy and intensive monitoring of the patient’s health before, during, and after surgery. The first meeting with the anesthetist takes place in the Preoperative Clinic. During the visit the anesthetist assesses possible risk of anesthesia during surgery on the basis of the medical history as well as diagnostic and laboratory tests. The doctor also describes a method of anesthesia for surgery as well as a postoperative pain therapy.
During surgery in the operating theater, the anesthetist and the anesthesiological nurse are always near the patient. Anesthesia is administered and monitored according to the best methods and by means of the most modern apparatus.
After surgery the patient is taken to the Postoperative Unit, where his/her vital signs are constantly monitored by anesthetists and anesthesiological nurses. The unit is located in the immediate vicinity of the operating theater and the Intensive Care Unit.
Patients requiring intensive care and supervision stay in the Intensive Care Unit, which has the most modern equipment intended for medical monitoring and resuscitation. The unit has been designed in such a way so as to ensure the highest level of patient safety and the central nursing station enables individual, 24-hour observation and monitoring of the patient’s health. Anesthetists are on a 24-h duty, thus providing patients with permanent care and assistance.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care also includes the Acute Pain Service team consisting of anesthetists and anesthesiological nurses. The team assesses postoperative pain, establishes the appropriate treatment method and ensures comfort to each patient after surgery.
The Department applies the best methods of pain relief such as Patient Controlled Analgesia, preemptive analgesia and continuous administration of local anesthetics. This creates conditions enabling patient’s quick and possibly painless recovery.
