Joint endoprosthetic surgery

Can joint endoprosthetics be minimally invasive?

Joint endoprosthetic surgery is often treated as the last resort. Meanwhile, it appears that the sooner the operation of the damaged joint is carried out, the better result can be achieved. Using the unique minimally invasive method ensures moreover that there is much less risk of further complications and that the time of recovery is significantly shorter.

Endoprosthetics surgery is used to treat degenerative changes, injuries resulting from traffic or sports accidents, and in the case of congenital malformations. This treatment is therefore not designed exclusively for older people.

At the Medicover Hospital, we observe more and more patients aged 30–40 who require endoprosthetic surgery. Very active lifestyle, which increases the number of injuries, including accidents and lesions during sports activities on the one hand, and overweight on the other hand result in the increase in the number of young Poles suffering from severe joint pain,’ says Professor Maciej Kielar, M.D., Ph.D., of the Medicover Hospital.

Minimally invasive method

In most patients, endoprosthetics provokes big concern. They fear pain, rejection of the prosthesis by the body and a long period of convalescence. Meanwhile, by using the so called minimally invasive surgery technique and the latest prostheses, the recovery time is much shorter and, above all, less painful.
The Medicover Hospital, as one of the few hospitals in Poland, offers hip and knee endoprosthetic surgeries with the use of minimally invasive method. It allows the patient to move around without crutches even on the next day after the surgery, and within 5–10 days the patient may return home. Of course, the time of recovery largely depends on the degree of damage to the joint and a general medical condition of the patient.

Precision

Carrying out a hip endoprosthetics surgery with the use of minimally invasive method is much more difficult than the traditional surgery. It requires extraordinary precision, especially when placing the prosthesis. That is why the Medicover Hospital uses the most modern equipment, and the operations are conducted under conditions that meet the highest medical safety standards by doctors from the leading hip surgery centres in Poland.
