How to prepare for urodynamic testing?
The urodynamic test is performed in cases with no clinical improvement during conservative treatment, or after failure of surgical treatment, or before planned surgical repair.
The test includes comprehensive evaluation of the urinary bladder and urethra functions with special catheters that are inserted into the urinary bladder through the urethra and into the rectum through the anus. The test is not painful and is performed on a special chair. We ensure that the test is performed in a intimate and as much relaxed atmosphere as possible. The test takes about 40 minutes, and ends with a conclusion for further course of diagnostics and treatment.
The day before the test
It is recommended to have light food and drink only non-carbonated beverages. On the evening before the test it is recommended to insert a glycerine suppository into the rectum. If there is no effect, it is recommended to administer an enema (ready to use enemas can be bought at the chemists’) in order to empty the rectum.
The day of the test
In the morning, the patient should urinate and defecate, drink about half a litre of fluids, and have light breakfast.
In order to obtain reliable results, the test should be performed when the bladder is full. Hence – if it is possible – the patient should not urinate for about 4 hours before the test.
If you have any current test results, please take them with you:
- Urinalysis;
- Urine culture;
- Kidney function tests (urea, creatinine, uric acid);
- Ultrasound of female genital organs, ultrasound of the kidneys, computed tomography of the urinary system, urography (if these tests were ever performed), other tests;
- Results of previous urodynamic tests.
