What are palatine tonsils?
They are masses of lymphoid tissue taking part in body’s reaction to pathogenic organisms. They are located symmetrically in the oral part of the pharynx between front and rear palatine arches, reaching from soft palate to base of the tongue.
When does palatine tonsil hypertrophy happen?
Frequent URIs can lead to palatine tonsil hypertrophy, where proliferation of immune system cells takes place. The hypertrophy can cause breathing disorders during sleep and can be an indication for surgery.
